ROLCA Writing Class-By Faith Liao

I think writing class is fun. Why? Well, our teacher, Ms. Stacey, teaches us how to write better. You also get to chew gum while you write and work. Every week, you will receive fun homework that you will enjoy, too!

Secondly, our teacher, Ms. Stacey, is very nice. Sometimes she’s funny, and we all laugh out loud. Since I’m a Christian, I like having a teacher that is a Christian, too. Ms. Stacey teaches very well. The way she teaches will improve our writing. She also spends some time and reads us interesting books.

Third of all, I honestly like the rules. Since we have to focus to write, the class has to stay quiet. I think being loud wouldn’t let us concentrate on the work we have to finish. Also, we aren’t allowed to write inappropriate things. Who would want to hear something inappropriate?

Last but not least, writing needs humor. Writing about funny things that happened will make others laugh. Writing class is a place where you learn and at the same time have fun. So, sign up for writing class!

My Happiest Moment By Alyssa Chen

My Happiest Moment

By Alyssa Chen

March 5,2015

I slowly took my scarf off. "Karen Gong", "Hannah Ding", "Kaitlin Wong"… After waiting a while, I heard my friends' names. Then, my teacher started to say "Al…" I held my breath as she continued. "…yssa Chen" was so happy! Okay, let's start from the beginning.

I was at Mission Center Performing Arts for the awards ceremony for my 2014 placement test. I was surprised that I was the only non-dance team "professional" in level 4. Before, I had auditioned for the dance team, but never joined. After waiting for all the dances to end and all certificates to be handed out, it was time for the professional awards. The Professional level is for classes levels four and up. In level four testing, if you get over 90 points or higher you are in the Professional level. Many people left, and my mom was totally convinced that I didn't make it. I convinced her to stay by saying "Please can I stay and see who gets the hundred bucks?" Then, she finally agreed and we stayed. First, they announced the graduates. Then, they announced the professional levels higher than mine. Finally, they were to announce professional level one. "Alyssa Chen" I heard my teacher announce in a formal voice. I was shocked, surprised, and extremely excited. I was so thrilled that l had made it to the professional level! I went home overjoyed with a medal and two certificates. After waiting for a while without much confidence, this turned out to be the best day ever.

My Favorite Types of Gum By Alyssa Chen

My Favorite Types of Gum

By Alyssa Chen

February 15,2015

There're many types of gum, but my favorite ones are Sour Patch, Trident (including Layers), Ice Cubes, and Orbit.

First, I like Sour Patch Gum because of its taste. When you chew it for a few minutes, you feel like the flavor has gone out. But if you stretch it like bubblegum until it has holes, more flavor will come out. Next, I like Trident and Trident Layers because the flavor is good. My favorite Trident flavor is Hawaiian Punch. My favorite Trident Layers gums are Candy Cane and Strawberry. When you chew Trident Layers Strawberry flavor, your month smells very good. When you chew Candy Cane flavor, your mouth smells minty at the end. Third of all, I like Ice Cubes because of the many flavors and shape. My favorite flavor is mint. I also like how they come in small boxes. Last, I like Orbit Gum because it's very soft. My favorite flavor is cool mint. Clearly, these are my favorite types of gum.

Swim Meets- Allison Wu

Every year my swim team has at least ten swim meets, and I have a lot of fun at all of them. I have many friends at swim meets. I like to play with them, swim with them, and cheer for them. In return, they cheer for me, unless if we are swimming together.
I love swimming. Even though it takes practice to be fast and precise, it doesn't take the fun out of it. Swimming is my hobby. I started swimming at the age of four and got into swimming at five. At first, I swam at Rancho Swimming and than switched to Peak. At swimming events, I swim the events I like because I like all strokes.
I can't have sugar during a meet, but that doesn't mean I'm eating things I don't like, I like fruit salad. After swimming, I get to eat ice cream and snow cones.
Swim meets are an important part of swimming. It challenges everybody to do their best.

My Worst Ouch Story -By Miriam Chen

My Family went to Death Valley with over ten families before Christmas last year. We rode on a tour bus for over two hours. I came out of the bathroom eager to smell the fresh air in Death Valley.

"Finally!" I thought. I got outside and took a deep breath. I looked around and dashed to find my friends nearby. As my friends and I walked around the sand dunes, my friend rolled down the dunes like a ball. Then when we got farther and farther into the dunes, we dug a hole big enough to fit a basketball just for fun. When we were about to be finished, our parents told us to head back to our bus and prepare to leave. Walking up the dunes was actually pretty challenging since you had to use lots of energy just to get up. On the concrete, where the bus parked, my shoes were filled with sand. I leaned on the rock next to me as big as a chair to empty out the sand. Once I was done, I lifted my head up and a rock came shooting like an arrow aiming for my face. Bang! The small rock struck me in the face right under my left eye. When I felt my face, it stung a bit. That's when I knew that a layer of skin had come off. My dad came rushing over and asked me if I was okay or not. I nodded slowly, but tears came out of my eyes. My dad gave me a hug, and we headed to the bus. On the bus I avoided eye contacted with other people.
In case if you were wondering, it was a little boy that threw the rock. He was just throwing it randomly. In the end, he got in big trouble for hurting me. This was a painful moment and was one of my worst ouch stories!

Biography of Stan Lee-By Ryan Chen

Stanley Martin Lieber was born in New York on December 28, 1922. During his school years, he was very intelligent and was allowed to skip several grades. He also liked to read very much. The Hardy Boys series was a favorite. In 1940, Stanley, just out of high school, was hired by Timely Comics, a comic book company. Stanley used the pen name Stan Lee. Stan’s first comic book story was published in Captain America comics series. The story was a hit for people in 1941. In the same year, Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor and made the US fight Japan in World War II. Soon, in November of 1942, Stan Lee went to serve in World War II. He was part of Signal Corps, which wrote and made training manuals. After three years at war, Stan Lee was hired by Timely Comics as an editor and chief writer in New York in 1945.
In the fall in 1947, Joan Boocock entered Stan’s life after being introduced at a party. Today, at 2015, Stan and Joan have been married for more than 60 years! In 1950, as the Korean War came out, comic book companies, including Stan’s, made and produced a lot of war comics. In the same year, Stan Lee and Joan had their first child, Joan Celia, but Stan called her Little Joan to not be confused with the mother. Then three years after the first child was born, another child was born but sadly died three days after its birth.
When Timely Comics was changed to Atlas Comics in 1960, Stan, at the age of 40, decided to quit and find another writing job, but his family outvoted him so he continued on and then created a team of superheroes that was successful. As Stan continued, he worked with his friend artist Jake Kirby, and together they created the Incredible Hulk. At first, Stan wanted to create new character. One day, in his office, Stan was watching a fly climb up a wall. He came up with an idea to create a superhero that could climb onto the wall and ceilings. By 1962, Stan created a teenager named Peter Parker to be his superhero--Spider-Man.  The shy boy had special powers to defeat criminals. Spider-Man was one of the most popular superheroes. In 1966, some of Stan’s characters were made into television series, such as the Marvel Superhero on ABC channel.
Finally, in 1972, Stan was promoted to publisher of Marvel Comics after the company’s name was changed again, replacing Martin Goodman, the former publisher. In 2002, the Spider-Man movie finally came out after arguments about which company to film and makes the movie. The movie hit the Guinness Book of Records when in one day, the box office income alone was 43.6 million dollars. It also made a total of $403 million dollars at the theaters.
In 2010, Stan Lee created a documentary about his own life, called Stan Lee, With Great Power. At 84 years old, Stan was honored with the National Medal of Arts for his long, hard work contributing to the writing of comic books. He liked to come up new ideas and try new things. We are still enjoying these characters he created through movies, TV, comic books, and novels. Stan Lee will be remembered because he has brought us wonderful memories and happiness. To this day, Stan still continues to work and never stops or gives up.

My Worst Ouch Story-By Faith Liao

Have you ever gotten a splinter? Well I have. It doesn't feel good. When I was at my Chinese school, Faith, Hope, and Love School, it was recess time. I sat on a wooden bench and slid my hand on the bench. OUCH!!! I felt a spiky thing in my hand. I checked it and saw a brown line. So I asked a teacher to give me a band-aid. The band-aid on my hand didn't feel comfortable.

Then it was class time from 2:30 to 5:30. When it was 5:30, it was recess again. Soon I walked out and saw a big, old, rusty tree. Wrinkled leaves fell on my head. I felt the trunk of the tree. Suddenly, OUCH!!! There is another splinter on my left hand. It stung. I had to ask for another band-aid.

When it was 6:00 my mom drove me home. On the way, I told her what happened that day. When we went in, she grabbed a pair of tweezers and dug the splinter out. Small tears rolled down my cheek. I didn't dare to look. But before I knew it, it started to bleed.

From that day on, I never touch a tree or slide my hand on a wooden bench. Or at least I don't touch anything wooden if I can avoid it. Getting splinter are the worst!

Supertimer-By Alison Wu

Are you having trouble keeping time, or just can’t remember to do things? If you think that this describes you well, come buy the Supertimer!  The Supertimer  is the bestselling iPhone-like product where you simply stick it on your belly button, set a time and type in a task if you want, using the pull-out keyboard. You can set 45 different times at once, so don’t worry about how many things you have to do. When the time comes, the Supertimer will vibrate softly. On the screen, it will show what task you are supposed to do. The Supertimer  is the best timer you could get.

The supertimer  will help you remember to do things. For example, if someone tells you to do homework in ten minutes but you forget and start reading a book, as long as you set the supertimer, you will be reminded to do your homework.

The supertimer is also waterproof. That means you can go for a swim without taking it off. If you are taking a bath, you can wear the supertimer to tell you when to get out of the tub.

If you need something small but keeps time, what should you use? The supertimer! The supertimer  will not affect your body. Nope, there will be no bumps on your shirt. With a weight of two ounces, you can take the supertimer anywhere.

Some people might think that you could do the same things with a normal wristwatch, but they are wrong. With the supertimer,  you can set multiple countdowns at once. Also, the supertimer  is quiet. No loud beeps, no alarms as loud as a police siren when time is up. Nobody will be bothered by it.

Bored? Pop off the timer part and pull out the games section! Yep, there are games, too. The games are stored right above the timer section. Pinch the small knob, pull gently, and start playing! Best of all, all the games are free.

Clearly, the supertimer is the best type of timer you can get. Multiple slots, games, quiet alarms, waterproof, small and convenient. Available online at www.funnyinventions.com.
